Our Top Release of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Top Spot.

On the surface, this work could seem closer to a challenging university quiz rather than the latest popular music record from a musician whose previous single was a collaboration with a global pop icon. Divided across 4 different movements and voiced in thirteen languages, we have a head-spinning classical-tinged album that delves into female mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, often through the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward here, carried by the lush presence of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within a long list of collaborators. Its sheer ambition alone makes the work of other pop stars appear quite small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to escape dry academic posturing is nearly miraculous, with complete praise going to the artist. Although this is not the first time album to alchemize the past and modern styles, the stakes feel far greater here, with the balancing act far more precarious. What really elevates this fourth release, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of playfulness. Similar to the iconic Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless desire to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That exuberant energy comes forth clearly on a stirring piano-led song about Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over several minutes. Suddenly, everything drops silent, and we hear a spontaneous laugh and a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down like cartoonish force. The song immediately shifts into the frenetic single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm with Lux is that the listener rarely quite understand—or even want to predict—where it will go to next."

Nearly each track concludes at a totally distinct point from how it started. One moment examines the fleeting nature of celebrity with a delicate orchestration before collapsing in digital cacophony. Another, a cut echoing her earlier trap-infused work starts off dark and sinister, with prowling beats, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Balance Of Art & Pop

A key balancing act of Lux is straddling the gap between bold experimentation and broad appeal. It is no surprise that the album has become her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. One track performed primarily in English swells around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious hooks as it spins skyward. This trick gets echoed on another powerful track that expands and contracts, weaving multiple melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces with its jaunty, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing have a sharp smile, akin to a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for high artistry in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep source of buried gems that requires patience to fully mine but never seem like a chore. While some big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, Lux offers a sumptuous feast at which the characters at it, some tipsy on sacred drink, flit from discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and common gossip about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day musical from pop's most endlessly creative visionary.
